Reiki and Therapeutic Touch Both Reiki and Therapeutic Touch are forms of energy healing. Research has shown that energy healing affects the physical body by changing the chemistry of the brain and body tissues and by improving circulation and muscle relaxation; and that it can improve emotional, mental and spiritual well-being which in turn relieves pain and improves the ability to cope. Reiki is a form of energy healing during which the practitioner channels energy to the client to promote healing on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. It is safe for all ages with no side effects or contraindications. Rediscovered in 1922 by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan, the popularity of this ancient form of healing has grown tremendously in the United States over the past 30 years and many hospitals now offer Reiki healing sessions to their in-house patients or through their out-patient clinics. During a typical healing session, the client remains completely clothed and comfortably lies down or sits in a chair, while the Reiki practitioner gently places his or her hands on various parts of the client's body or holds them a few inches from the body. Typical client experiences are deep relaxation sometimes leading to sleep, and slight sensations of heat, cold, tingling or pressure. A session typically lasts about one hour. Therapeutic Touch was developed in the 1960s by Delores Krieger PhD, RN, in cooperation with Dora Kuntz, a well known healer and researcher. Practitioners use sweeping motions with their hands to rebalance energy and promote healing. Research has shown it can help reduce stress on the immune system, relieve anxiety, speed wound healing, and decrease postoperative pain. It is used extensively by nurses in hospitals, and is completely safe for all ages. |
