Naturopathy Naturopathy is a 100 year old system of health care based on the understanding that our bodies are born with the ability to heal themselves provided we give them the right balance of natural elements to work with, such as nutritional food, vitamins and minerals, fresh air, clean water, positive thoughts and exercise. Naturopathy also emphasizes prevention. Traditional naturopaths do not treat the disease, they educate and treat the client...the whole client...not just the parts that happen to show signs of illness. They recognize the importance of the body-mind-spirit connection and how each area influences the others. To a naturopathic doctor, acute symptoms are actually a cleansing and healing in progress, the body's reaction to a problem; and chronic disease results from continually suppressing symptoms of acute disease. By suppressing symptoms, we hamper the body's natural reactions to protect and heal itself. Instead, a traditional naturopathic doctor works with clients to search for underlying causes of problems, rather than treating the symptoms. Underlying causes can include poor digestion; vitamin, mineral or hormonal imbalances; negative thinking; chronic stress; poor body alignment; energy imbalances; or other issues or combinations of issues. First and foremost traditional naturopaths are educators; they empower clients to take control of their own health; they work in partnership with their clients and together they agree upon beneficial lifestyle changes. Naturopathic counseling includes extensive interviewing to understand all aspects of a client's life; possible tests to determine imbalances in the body; and education as to natural options that a client can use either in addition to or instead of conventional care. Options may include nutritional supplementation, herbals, homeopathic remedies, bodywork, energy work, or such lifestyle changes as diet modifications, exercise and stress reduction. Traditional naturopaths are not medical doctors and will not diagnose disease, prescribe medications, or recommend you to stop taking any medications prescribed by your doctor. |
